High School & College Credit
General Elective Credit for All KCTC Programs
All programs (Full CTE, Intro to CTE, Career Focus, and CORE): KCTC recommends all programs earn up to 3.0 credits for one year. Local districts determine whether to grant integrated English, Math, and/or Visual/Performing/Applied Arts (VPAA) credits based on the recommendations by course below. Otherwise, all 3.0 credits would be General Elective credit. Note in the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) Waiver section that a credit waived is not a credit earned. All programs meet the MMC Online Learning Experience (OLE) requirements.
Non-CTE 1 Year Programs
Career Focus and CORE are not state-approved CTE courses. They do not have integrated credits available or MMC waivers. They should count only as general elective credit. For the 2022-23 year, Intro to Marketing is not yet a state-approved CTE program and should receive elective credit. Intro to Marketing anticipated to be state-approved CTE in 2023-24.
Intro to CTE Programs
(Option for Students to Return for a 2nd Year in Full CTE)
Programs: Intro to Automotive & Intro to Hospitality (Intro to Marketing beginning 2024-25)
There is not a path for Intro to Automotive or Intro to Hospitality students to be CTE completers; they will not be eligible for MMC Waivers. Beginning in 2023-24, MMC waivers for Intro to Marketing students depend on whether they continue on to a second year of Full CTE Entrepreneurship & Marketing and earn a grade the district deems successful.

MMC Waivers versus Integrated Credit
Students who are successful CTE completers* may waive the second credit of World/Foreign Language and the third credit of Science required by the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) per MCL 380.1278 a & b. Additional MMC Waivers may be granted for Social Studies (non-Civics), Health & PE, and VPAA for CTE program completers only with an approved personal curriculum.
*The term CTE completer means the student has completed the entire sequence of courses covering all CTE competencies. For the purposes of earning a credit for graduation, if the student meets the district’s definition of passing then that meets the intent of the law. For more information, see Leveraging CTE to Support Implementation of the Michigan Merit Curriculum.
Math Credit FAQ
MMC Frequently Asked Questions specifies that each pupil must successfully complete at least “4 credits in Mathematics… including at least Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II… and an additional Mathematics credit… Each pupil must successfully complete at least 1 Mathematics course during his or her final year of high school enrollment.” It also explicitly states CTE courses can meet this requirement: “Non-mathematics courses or experiences where students apply mathematics can also counts as the 4th credit/Senior year mathematics course such as… Career and Technical Education.”
